Members and friends of CARA, the California Alliance for Retired Americans, will visit home district offices of all 120 California legislators on Friday, May 17, from 930 AM to 1:30 PM.

This is the second year of CARA’s broad and intensive  legislative effort, which no other California advocacy group has attempted.

CARA’s district office visits this May 17 will focus on passage CARA-sponsored legislation satisfying two needs:

(1) The need for every California County to provide convenient, safe, and free disposal of unneeded or expired medicines.  Accumulation of unwanted medicines in homes had led to major problems of prescription drug abuse, and dangerous drug errors, particularly among seniors who take more medicines.  Unauthorized disposal of unwanted medicines has led to contamination of water and soil.  SB 727 demands all Counties set up such programs and administer them at pharmaceutical manufacturers’ expense.

(2) The need to provide local governments the money they need to establish low-speed traffic zones in areas where seniors live and congregate, and to post prominent signs in these areas.  Seniors and people with disabilities are a huge proportion of pedestrian injuries and deaths.  AB 707 provides funds for local governments to erect senior speed zone signs from already-existing state highway funds.

CARA will also urge passage of its other priority legislation on matters including:

  • disclosure of contributors to political advertising, (SB 52).
  • State-administered Medi-Cal expansion as part of the Affordable Care Act, (ABX1-1).
  • A Homeless Persons’ Bill of Rights, (AB 5).
  • narrowing the loophole where commercial property avoids property tax reassessment, (AB 188).
  • A Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, (AB 241)
