Resolution:  The National Convention of Gray Panther networks supports all legal efforts to grant Mumia Abu-Jamal a new trial.

Maggie Kuhn, esteemed founder of the Gray Panthers and fierce advocate for the civil and human rights of everyone, while living in Philadelphia granted an interview to the young journalist Mumia .  She would applaud his success within his profession, even during incarceration, and would defend his right to a new trial.

Whereas discussion of racism in our legal system – past, present and future – will improve the delivery of justice,

Whereas, the well-documented culture of racism in Philadelphia during the 70’s and 80’s is considered a factor in the conviction of Mumi,

Whereas international interest in Mumia’s fate has renewed universal understanding of the irrational injustices suffered by African-Americans because of their skin color,

Be it Resolved that the Gray Panthers extend their support for a new trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal.
