Put the Patriot Act Where it Belongs:
In the Trashcan of History!

Wednesday, July 14, Noon
Main SF Public Library Entrance,
Larkin St, between Grove and Fulton

Demonstrate Against the Patriot Act,
and its invasion of library, internet, and e-mail

Last week Representative Bernie Sander’s Freedom to Read Act was defeated by manipulation and skullduggery during a roll call vote in Congress. The library provision of the Patriot Act is one of the most controversial portions of the act. Known as Section 215, this portion of the Patriot Act gives the FBI power to monitor peoples’ reading, e-mail and internet use at public libraries without normal judicial authorization. Section 215 is one of the more blatant attempts to establish a climate of fear and undermine dissent.

San Francisco Chronicle writer Edward Epstein commented on the Congressional debacle over the library provision, "The intense debate also provided a glimpse of the sharp battle expected in Congress next year when the overall Patriot Act must be renewed or lapse.” (SF Chron, 7-9-2004)
